Glossary
Definitions for the financial, investment, and Annise-specific terms you'll see throughout the Annise app.
The terms below appear throughout the Annise app, with a short definition and where to find each one.
A
Account
A financial account linked to the Family Office, such as a brokerage account or bank account. Accounts hold securities and cash.
Where in Annise
Accessible via the sidebar (Accounts) and as the Accounts tab on the Family Office view.
Each account has its own detail view with 10 sub-tabs: Dashboard, Chart, Statements, Analytics, Insights, Account Holdings, Transactions, Location, Documents, Notes.
Account Holdings
A view of all holdings grouped by their parent account.
Where in Annise
Available as a sidebar navigation item and as the Account Holdings tab on the Family Office view. Displays holdings organized by account.
Advisor
A member role in Annise for financial, legal, estate, or tax advisors with limited access to the Family Office.
Where in Annise
Family Office → Members tab (role category). Also in Settings → Permissions under the Member Permissions table (Role column). Described in Explorer subscription plan as "Member Management: Advisors."
All Holdings
A global view of all holdings across all accounts and asset types.
Where in Annise
Sidebar navigation item (All Holdings). Shows holdings from all accounts in a unified table.
Allocation
The distribution of a portfolio across asset classes (e.g., Equity, Cash, Fixed Income). Expressed as Goal %, Actual %, and Drift.
Where in Annise
Family Office → Dashboard tab → Allocation card. Also visible in Account Dashboard tab. Configurable goals in Settings → Allocation Goals. Analyzed in depth in the Analytics tab.
Allocation Goal
A target percentage weighting for an asset class, set by the user to guide portfolio construction.
Where in Annise
Settings → Allocation Goals. Also displayed as the "Goal" column in the Allocation card on the Dashboard.
Alpha
The excess return of a portfolio relative to its benchmark. A positive alpha indicates outperformance; negative indicates underperformance.

Family Office → Dashboard tab → Benchmark card, shown as the bottom row.
Alternative Asset Classes
Non-traditional investment categories such as private equity, real estate, angel investments, and multi-family properties.
Where in Annise
Referenced in the Subscription page (Explorer plan feature list) as "Alternative Asset Classes: Unlimited personal assets" and "Alternative Asset Classes: Unlimited alternative asset classes." Managed via Private Holdings.
Asset
Any item of economic value held within the Family Office, including securities, cash, and real estate.
Where in Annise
"Assets" shown on the Net Worth card (Family Office → Dashboard).
Asset Class
A broad grouping of investments with similar characteristics (e.g., Equity, Fixed Income, Cash, Alternatives, Real Estate).

Allocation card on Dashboard, Settings → Allocation Goals, Analytics tab. Used as a filter and grouping dimension throughout.
B
Balance Sheet
A financial statement showing total assets, liabilities, and net worth at a specific point in time.
Where in Annise
Referenced in the Subscription page → Explorer plan feature list as "Statements: Balance Sheet." Available as a statement type from the Explorer plan. Also accessible via Statements tabs on Family Office and Account views.
Benchmark
A reference portfolio or index used to evaluate the relative performance of the Family Office's investments.

Family Office → Dashboard tab → Benchmark card. Settings → Benchmarks.
Beneficiary
A member role for individuals designated to receive assets from a trust or estate, with access limited to allowed details.
Where in Annise
Family Office → Members tab (role category). Described in Explorer subscription as "Member Management: Executors, trustees, and beneficiaries: Member that has access to allowed detail."
C
Cap Gains
Short for Capital Gains. A statement type showing realized gains and losses on sold investments.
Where in Annise
Subscription page → Navigator plan feature list as "Statements: Cap Gains." Available from the Navigator plan and above.
Capital Call
A request from a fund manager to transfer committed capital from an investor to the fund.
Where in Annise
Schedules sidebar sub-menu → Capital Calls. Also referenced on the Dashboard cash flow card as "Capital Calls & Asset Maturities." The Capital Calls section within Schedules tracks upcoming capital call obligations for private investments.
Cash
Cash and short-term liquid holdings within the portfolio. Treated as a distinct asset class.
Where in Annise
Shown as a row in the Allocation card on the Dashboard. Also shown as "Cash & Equivalents" on the Net Worth card.
Cash Flow
A financial statement showing money flowing into and out of the portfolio over a period.
Where in Annise
Listed as "Statements: Cash Flow" in the Explorer subscription plan. Also shown as the Estimated Cash Flow card on the Dashboard (forward-looking, labeled "Next Twelve Months").
Categories
Transaction categories used to classify income and expense transactions (e.g., Dividends, Interest, Management Fees).
Where in Annise
Settings → Categories. Also used as filters and labels on the Transactions view.
Coinbase
A cryptocurrency exchange platform supported as a custodial account connection.
Where in Annise
Subscription page → Explorer plan feature list as "Custodial Accounts: Crypto Coinbase."
Custodial Account
A brokerage or banking account held at a third-party institution (e.g., Fidelity, Schwab) and connected to Annise via integration.
Where in Annise
Subscription page → Explorer plan feature list as "Custodial Accounts: Unlimited brokerage connections" and "Custodial Accounts: Unlimited banking connections." Accounts are connected and synced automatically.
D
Dashboard
The main overview page for the Family Office or an Account, displaying key metrics through widget cards.
Where in Annise
The first tab on the Family Office view. Also the first tab on each Account detail view. Contains Net Worth card, Performance card, Estimated Cash Flow card, Allocation card, Benchmark card, and Family Office Details card.
Documents
A tab for storing and viewing uploaded files related to the Family Office, Account, or Security.
Where in Annise
Available as Documents tab on: Family Office view, Account detail view, Holding detail view. Supports .pdf, .jpg, .xls and other formats (per Explorer plan). Also mentioned in "Document Upload Reconciliation Alert" notification.
Domicile State
The primary tax jurisdiction of the Family Office. Used to calculate the applicable state tax rate on income.
Where in Annise
Settings → Income Taxes — shown as a dropdown labeled "Domicile State." Also displayed as a field in the Family Office Details card on the Dashboard, where it links to the Income Taxes settings.
Drift
The difference between the Goal allocation percentage and the Actual allocation percentage for a given asset class. Positive drift means overweight; negative means underweight.

Family Office → Dashboard tab → Allocation card, shown as the "Drift" column. Also used in the Analytics tab for allocation analysis.
E
Estimated Cash Flow
A forward-looking projection of cash flows over the selected time horizon (typically Next Twelve Months), including income, fees, taxes, capital calls, and net draws.

Family Office → Dashboard tab → third widget card labeled "Estimated Cash Flow (In-Month Estimates)." Shows sub-fields: Income, Gross Yield, Fees, Taxes, Capital Calls & Asset Maturities, Net Draws.
Estimated Tax Payments
A statement type showing projected quarterly or annual tax payment obligations based on investment income.

Executor
A member role for individuals responsible for administering an estate.
Where in Annise
Described in Explorer subscription plan as "Member Management: Executors, trustees, and beneficiaries: Member that has access to allowed detail." Visible as a role category on the Family Office → Members tab.
Explorer
A subscription plan tier at $39.99/mo or $399.99/year providing multi-platform access, member management, custodial connections, securities management, and more.

Family Assets
Non-investment assets owned by the Family Office (e.g., real estate, personal property, vehicles).
Where in Annise
Family Office → Dashboard tab → Net Worth card, shown as "Family Assets" sub-field.
Family Office
The primary organizational entity in Annise that groups accounts, members, documents, holdings, and settings under one umbrella.
Where in Annise
The core container of the application. Accessed via the sidebar (Dashboard) and the breadcrumb "Family Office" label in the header. Each Family Office has a unique ID.
Family Office Details
A widget card on the Family Office Dashboard showing key configuration details.
Where in Annise
Family Office → Dashboard tab → rightmost widget card. Fields: Family Office Name, Domicile State (linked to Income Taxes), Subscription (linked to plan page), Description. Has a "More" (⋮) button.
Fees
Investment management or advisory fees charged against the portfolio.
Where in Annise
Family Office → Dashboard tab → Performance card (as a sub-field). Also in the Estimated Cash Flow card sub-fields. Fee Update notification is in the Family Office notification category.
G
Gross Yield
Total income generated by the portfolio expressed as a percentage of portfolio value, before fees and taxes.
Where in Annise
Family Office → Dashboard tab → Estimated Cash Flow card, shown as "Gross Yield."
I
Income
Cash received from investments including dividends, interest, and distributions.
Where in Annise
Family Office → Dashboard tab → Performance card (sub-field) and Estimated Cash Flow card (sub-field "Income"). Also a key column in the Transactions view.
Income Statement
A financial statement summarizing income and expenses over a period.
Where in Annise
Subscription page → Explorer plan as "Statements: Income Statement." Available via the Statements tab on Family Office and Account views.
Income Taxes
The Settings page for configuring effective Federal and State tax rates used to calculate estimated taxes in statements.
Where in Annise
Settings → Income Taxes. Breadcrumb: Family Office → Income Taxes. Contains a Domicile State dropdown, Tax Rates table (columns: Tax Rates, Federal, State, Total Tax Rate %; rows: US, Outside US (Domicile)), and a SAVE button.
Insights
A tab providing AI-driven or curated analysis and observations about the portfolio.
Where in Annise
Available as the Insights tab on: Family Office view, Account detail view, and Holding detail view.
Interest Payments
Interest paid by the Family Office on outstanding liabilities or loans.
Where in Annise
Family Office → Dashboard tab → Performance card, shown as "Interest Payments" sub-field.
Invitation Status
A section showing pending member invitations and their current status (pending, accepted, etc.).
Where in Annise
Settings → Permissions → Invitation Status section. Includes search bar, Status filter (All / other options), and table columns: Name, Email, Sign Up Date, Status, Last Update Date.
IRR
Internal Rate of Return. An annualized return metric that accounts for the timing and magnitude of cash flows. Commonly used for private investments.

J
J-Curve
A performance chart pattern common in private equity where early returns are negative (fees and expenses precede gains) and then rise over time as investments mature.

L
Liabilities
The total value of debts and obligations owed by the Family Office.

Location
A tab providing geographic breakdown and visualization of holdings and assets.

Available as Location tab on: Family Office view, Account detail view, and Holding detail view. Also an analytics dimension ("Analytics: Allocation by geography" in Explorer plan).
M
Manager
A member role for fund managers or portfolio managers associated with the Family Office. Available in the Navigator plan.
Where in Annise
Referenced in Subscription page → Navigator plan as "Manager and Advisor Management." Also referenced in notification "Notifications: Manager / Advisor Alerts."
Managers & Advisors
A sidebar navigation item and management page for financial, legal, estate, and tax advisors.
Where in Annise
Left sidebar, between Opportunities/Schedules and Owners. Navigates to the Managers & Advisors management page.
Maturities
The schedule section tracking upcoming asset maturities — the dates on which a fixed-income security or loan comes due and the principal must be repaid.

Sidebar → Schedules → Maturities. Also linked from Dashboard cash flow card as "Capital Calls & Asset Maturities."
Member
Any person with access to the Family Office. Members have specific roles (Owner, Advisor, Beneficiary, Trustee, Member) controlling their permissions.

Family Office → Members tab shows all members by role. Settings → Permissions lists members with their access details.
Member Management
A set of features for managing who has access to the Family Office and at what permission level. Included in Explorer plan and above.
Where in Annise
Referenced throughout the Subscription page Explorer plan feature list. Managed via Settings → Permissions and the Family Office → Members tab.
Messages
A messaging and communication hub for the Family Office.
Where in Annise
Sidebar → Messages. Also referenced in Explorer plan as "iOS: Access all of your assets, analytics, cash flow, and messaging on the iOS app."
MOIC
Multiple on Invested Capital. A return metric showing total value received relative to total capital invested (e.g., 1.14x = $1.14 returned per $1.00 invested).

Navigator
A subscription plan tier at $69.99/mo or $699.99/year, adding Manager/Advisor management, advanced analytics, tax statements, cap gains reporting, and dedicated support.

Subscription page. Listed as the third tier.
Net Draws
The net capital drawn from private investments (capital calls minus distributions received).
Where in Annise
Family Office → Dashboard tab → Estimated Cash Flow card → "Net Draws" sub-field. Linked to the Capital Calls view.
Net Worth
The total value of all assets minus all liabilities. The primary financial summary metric.
Where in Annise
Family Office → Dashboard tab → Net Worth card (top-left widget). Shows the current total, the change amount, and the change percentage. Sub-fields: Assets, Liabilities, Investment Assets, Family Assets, Cash & Equivalents, MOIC, IRR.
Notes
A tab for storing free-text notes and observations associated with a record.

Available as Notes tab on: Family Office view, Account detail view, and Holding detail view.
Notifications
Configurable alerts and messages sent to members about portfolio events, system events, and Family Office changes.

Configured in Settings → Default Notifications. Also referenced throughout subscription plan feature lists. Notifications are organized into 7 categories: Portfolio, Platform, Family Office, Data Quality, Alerts, Security, Customer Support.

Owner
The highest-permission member role, with full View and Edit access to all aspects of the Family Office.

Family Office → Members tab → Owner role category. Settings → Permissions — expanded row shows "Role: Owner" with View ✓ and Edit ✓. Also visible as a role in the Subscription plan description.
Owners
A tab on the Family Office view and a sidebar navigation item for managing asset owners (individuals and entities who own assets).
Where in Annise
Sidebar item and Family Office → Owners tab. Shows owners (people and legal entities) associated with holdings.
P
Partnership Accounting
A financial reporting feature for partnership-structured investments, showing partnership-level P&L and allocations.
Where in Annise
Subscription page → Voyager plan feature list as "Statements: Partnership Accounting (out by year end)." Available in Voyager plan only.
Payee
A person or entity to whom payments are made, linked to transaction records.
Where in Annise
Settings → Payees. Table columns: Payee/Payor, Transaction Uses.
Payor
A person or entity from whom payments are received.
Where in Annise
Settings → Payees — the table column header reads "Payee/Payor," indicating both directions are managed together.
Performance
The return generated by a portfolio or security over a selected time period, expressed as a dollar amount and/or percentage.
Where in Annise
Family Office → Dashboard tab → Performance card (center-left widget). Shows date range, return type (Simple Return dropdown), dollar return and percentage. Sub-fields: Income, Total Income (incl. gain/loss), Fees, Interest Payments.
Permissions
The Settings page for managing member access, roles, and view/edit rights for the Family Office.

Settings → Permissions. Contains two sections: Member Permissions (existing members with expandable role/view/edit detail) and Invitation Status (pending invitations). Breadcrumb: Family Office → Permissions.
Private Holdings
Non-custodial, privately held investment positions not connected through a brokerage (e.g., private equity, real estate, venture investments).

Sidebar → Private Holdings and Family Office → Private Holdings tab. Separate from Account Holdings which are custodial.
R
Records Management
A feature set for uploading, organizing, and managing documents and notes associated with the Family Office.
Where in Annise
Referenced in Subscription page → Explorer plan as "Records Management: Upload documents (.pdf, .jpg, .xls, etc.)" and "Records Management: Upload notes."
Role
A member's designated access level within the Family Office. Determines what they can see and do.

Settings → Permissions → expanded member row shows "Role" column. Family Office → Members tab groups members by role. Roles: Owner, Advisor, Beneficiary, Trustee, Member.

Schedules
A sidebar navigation item that expands to show Capital Calls and Maturities sub-sections for tracking future cash obligations.

Left sidebar, between Opportunities and Managers & Advisors. Expands to show: Capital Calls and Maturities.
Security
A financial instrument such as a stock, ETF, bond, mutual fund, or other investable asset. Also a notification category for login/password events.
Where in Annise
Holdings tables list securities with ticker, name, quantity, and value. The "Find a Security" global search locates securities. The Holding detail view provides per-security tabs. Also a notification category tab in Default Notifications.
Simple Return
A return calculation method showing the raw percentage gain or loss without adjusting for cash flow timing.

Family Office → Dashboard tab → Performance card → return type dropdown, currently showing "Simple Return." Alternative options available via dropdown (e.g., TWR).
Statements
Financial reports and statements associated with the Family Office, accounts, or holdings. Available types vary by subscription tier.

Top-level Statements tab on Family Office view (with General Ledger and Trial Balance sub-tabs — both "Feature coming soon"). Also available as Statements tab on Account and Holding detail views.

Tax Lots
A tab on the Holding detail view showing individual purchase lots with acquisition date, quantity, cost basis, and unrealized gain/loss.

Tax Rates
The table in Settings → Income Taxes showing effective Federal, State, and Total Tax Rate percentages by jurisdiction.

Settings → Income Taxes → Tax Rates table. Columns: Tax Rates, Federal, State, Total Tax Rate %. Rows: US, Outside US — Domicile.
Total Income (incl. gain/loss)
Combined income from all sources, including dividends, interest, and realized gains/losses.

Family Office → Dashboard tab → Performance card → "Total Income (incl. gain/loss)" sub-field.
Total Tax Rate %
The combined Federal + State effective tax rate percentage, auto-calculated in Income Taxes settings.

Settings → Income Taxes → Tax Rates table → "Total Tax Rate %" column.
Transactions
Individual financial events (buys, sells, income receipts, expenses, transfers) recorded within accounts.
Where in Annise
Sidebar → Transactions for global view. Also the Transactions tab on Family Office view and Account detail view. Transactions are categorized using Settings → Categories.
Trust
A legal entity for holding assets on behalf of beneficiaries. Trust management features are in the Voyager plan.
Where in Annise
Referenced in Subscription page → Voyager plan features: "Trust Management: Filters by Trust (Revocable, Non-Revocable, etc.)" and "Notifications: Trust-related Alerts." New Trust Created and Trust Member Deleted notifications are in the Family Office notification category.
Trustee
A member role for individuals who administer a trust, with access to trust-related details.

TWR
Time-Weighted Return. A return calculation methodology that eliminates the distorting effect of external cash flows (deposits, withdrawals), making it ideal for comparing manager performance.

Voyager
A subscription plan tier at $99.99/mo or $999.99/year, adding Trust Management features, trust-related notifications, and Partnership Accounting statements to all Navigator features.

WatchOS
Apple's operating system for Apple Watch. Annise supports real-time portfolio viewing and changes on Apple Watch.
